Solar Panel Scam Calls: How to Spot Them and Why a Trusted Installer Matters

Scam calls targeting solar panel owners are on the rise — and they’re becoming increasingly convincing.

30th September, 2025

Just last week, one of our Cornwall customers picked up the phone to a man claiming to be her “SolarEdge Account Manager.”

He told her that her home had experienced an electricity surge and insisted he would be sending an engineer out the following week to check her system. Understandably concerned, she called us straight away.

Here’s the twist: she doesn’t even have a SolarEdge system. After we phoned her supposed “account manager” back, his aggressive and intimidating manner confirmed our suspicions... he was a scammer. We advised our customer not to let him into her home.

This experience highlights two things:

  1. How easy it is to be caught off guard by a solar scam call.

  2. How important it is to have a trusted solar installer that you can rely on for advice, support and peace of mind.

How to Spot a Solar Scam Call

Unfortunately, scams like this aren’t isolated incidents. Homeowners with solar panels, or who may benefit from them, are often targeted with calls that sound official but are designed to pressure you into handing over money, signing contracts, or allowing someone into your home.

Here are some red flags to watch out for:

  • Unsolicited contact – If someone calls out of the blue claiming to represent an installer or equipment manufacturer, be cautious.
  • Urgent warnings – Scammers often claim there’s a “serious fault” or “safety risk” that needs immediate attention.
  • Pressure tactics – If the caller sounds aggressive, intimidating, or insists on sending someone round straight away, it’s a warning sign.
  • Requests for personal details – Never give out account numbers, passwords, or financial information over the phone.

One particular scam currently targeting UK homeowners with solar panels involves a group calling themselves the “Green Homes Scheme.” They claim to offer a £4,000 grant and a 10p increase to your Feed-in Tariff payments if you agree to upgrade your solar system through them. Letters are sent to “The Homeowner,” designed to look like official government correspondence, which makes the offer seem legitimate at first glance. However, this is not a genuine scheme. It has been reported by numerous affected customers on Trustpilot, and it’s important to know that Feed-in Tariff rates are set by the government and cannot be increased by any third party. In fact, modifying your existing solar system could void your eligibility for Feed-in Tariff payments entirely.

Rule of thumb:
If you didn’t contact them first, take a step back. Always call your installer directly to double-check.

Why Choosing a Trusted Installer Matters

When you invest in solar, you’re not just buying panels. You’re investing in a system that should last up to 25 years or more. That means choosing an installer isn’t just about the installation day; it’s about the relationship that follows.

At Natural Generation, we believe in long-term support. From the moment your system goes live, you’ll always have a local, established team on hand to answer questions, provide maintenance, and give you peace of mind if something doesn’t feel right.

Our customers know they can call us any time, whether it’s for a routine service, a system upgrade, or simply to check if a phone call is genuine. That’s the difference a trusted, long-term installer makes.

Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert advises "it's important you do your research and use a reputable company before getting solar panels fitted... and once you've got them, don't fall for ads trying to sell you solar panel servicing or cleaning".

What to Do if You Receive a Suspicious Call About Your Solar Panels

If you ever find yourself in the same situation as our customer, here’s what to do:

  1. Don’t share personal details – Never give out account numbers, addresses, or financial details to an unsolicited caller.

  2. Don’t agree to a visit – Genuine installers won’t send an engineer without prior communication that you can verify.

  3. Take their details – Note down their name, company, and contact number.

  4. Call your installer – Pick up the phone to your trusted installer (like us) and double-check.

  5. Trust your instincts – If something feels off, it probably is.

We know how unsettling it can be to receive a call like this. That’s why we want every Natural Generation customer to feel completely supported, not just at installation but for the entire lifetime of their solar system.
